Canadian Sphinx

Holders of the Canadian sphinxes periodically ask who is sent by providence - an alien creature, an animated figurine, a man in the shape of a cat or just a bald animal.

Breed history

The Canadian Sphynx is part of the group of hairless cat breeds that have a natural mutation that is responsible for the absence of hair. For the first time, talking about naked cats in the Middle Ages, then they showed up among the Aztecs and even later received their own name - Mexican hairless, under which they appeared at felinological exhibitions in the USA. The last couple was barren and went into another world in the 30s of the last century.

The year of creation of the unique breed is considered to be 1975, although the temporary status was assigned to it a little earlier in another country (Canada). The countdown began from the birth in 1966 of a hairless cat, nicknamed Prun and six months later actively included in the breeding program. The mother of Prun, his sisters, daughters and granddaughters, who brought both normal and hairless kittens, were involved in the crossing. Despite the success of the selection, the Cat Lovers Association revoked the temporary status of the new breed in 1971, guided by a number of arguments:

  • there were very few representatives of the breed (without hope of population growth);
  • The breeding strategy used by nurseries was called unsuccessful;
  • sphinx kittens required serious care and died more often than usual.

It is interesting! The turning year for the sphinxes came in 1975, when a short-haired cat from Minnesota (USA) gave birth to a hairless kitten named Epidermis. A year later, a bald cat was born there, who made a pair of epidermis and sent with him to the Z. Stardust cattery, where the production of sphinxes was put on stream.

The founders of the European breed line are two bald cats (Pinky and Palota), found in Toronto and brought to the Netherlands in the late 70s. For the development of the breed, mating of the Canadian sphinxes with Devon Rexes was required, which subsequently turned into failures in the exterior. The sphinxes of most modern lines (both European and American) have lost their unique wrinkling and now more often resemble porcelain figurines.

The first Canadian sphynxes in the Russian Federation were the cat Aztec Baringa (known as Pelmen) and the cat Nefertiti brought from the Grandpaws cattery. These North American manufacturers belonged to breeder Tatyana Smirnova, who founded Ruaztec Nursery (Moscow). The history of Canadian sphinxes in Russia began with Pelmen and Nefertiti.

Description of the Canadian Sphinx

The lines of his body are smooth, but not elegant - the curved forelimbs are adjacent to the more elongated hind limbs (which gives a peculiar gait), a soft thick belly and a donut tail pressed to the side. The Canadian sphinx has a muscular, dense body with suede folded skin, where wool is allowed behind the ears, nose, tail and legs (to the hock). The weight of the sphinxes varies between 3.5-6 kg.

Breed standards

The breed, dating back 50 years, is attributed to the formed and recognized by all felinological organizations, each of which has developed its own standard.

WCF breed standard

The head in the form of a smoothed wedge is planted on a muscular neck and has a rounded muzzle with a strong chin, distinct cheekbones, pronounced mustache pads and nose bridge with an average / light foot.

The vibrissae are short and seemingly broken. Huge and wide (at the root) ears are set straight and without hair inside. A little hair is permissible on the outside and on the external bases. Big eyes in the shape of a lemon are extended to the outer edge of the ears. The iris corresponds to the color or painted in green / greenish brown.

Body of medium length with a wide, sometimes barrel-shaped chest and a rounded, but not fat, belly. The limbs are muscular; the front legs are widely set. Oval paws are equipped with thick pads and long graceful fingers. The tail is similar to rat (pointed from the root to the end) and can end with a lion's bunch. The skin, when stroking resembling suede, should maintain breed folding. Most folds are in kittens, adult sphinxes are smoothed with age (more or less).

Cat character

Those who managed to touch the hot pear-shaped body once and for all change their mind about the breed, if it was not very flattering. I don’t want to let this cat out of my hands, which, however, she herself is glad - Canadian sphynxes love people, from the adored owner and ending with strangers who accidentally looked into the house.

It is interesting! Sphinxes need a human society, they are loving and affectionate without compulsion, sociable and cannot stand loneliness, gladly compiling any domestic animal (without analyzing sexes and ranks).

These cats are intelligent and well-mannered, able to keep paws in their hands and control their emotions, are not prone to aggression, do not remember insults and are not revengeful. It is these features that make the Canadian Sphinx the kids ’best friend, with whom they communicate and play on equal terms, never biting or releasing claws.

To all the advantages of the sphinx, its excellent learning ability is added: pets bring light objects, open drawers and doors, perform simple tricks and even “talk”. True, they have not yet learned to articulate the causes of human ailments, although they can easily cope with them simply by lying on a sore spot in your body. The fact that the Canadian sphinxes feel and are able to correct deviations of the energy field, say many owners of these bald healers.

Life span

It is known that many of the ancestors of the breed, who ended their earthly path at a very advanced age, were 16 and even 19 years old. The lifespan of modern Canadian sphinxes largely depends on the characteristics of their content and genetics.

It is interesting! The wonders of longevity were demonstrated by a regular in many felinological exhibitions, the Canadian sphinx Granpa Rexs Allen. He lived for almost 30 years, 12 of which he devoted to an exhibition career.

Canadian Sphinx Content

Contrary to the thesis about the capriciousness of the breed, which supposedly requires maximum heating of the apartment, adult sphinxes do without greenhouse conditions and wrapping up. The exception is kittens up to 3 months old, not able to regulate their own body temperature.

By the way, Canadian sphynxes are not hotter than other cats and have a standard temperature of 38.6 degrees (up to 39 for kittens). Sphinxes only seem warmer due to the fact that our hand touches immediately on their skin, and not on the hair.

Care and hygiene

The skin of the sphinxes is quickly greasy, which is eliminated with wet baby wipes or bathing. By the way, excessive salting often signals nutritional errors or ailments.

Not all Canadian sphinxes wash with pleasure, for which there are many explanations, for example, too hot / cold water or fear of a shower hose. In the second case, water the cat from the bucket or fill the bath to the level of his abdomen, bathe with your favorite toy. If the cat is afraid of water, just wipe it with a damp towel.

Pay special attention to the tail - the pores on it quickly become clogged and inflamed, leading to acne. Preventive measures:

  • wipe the skin of the sphinx with a solution of chlorhexidine;
  • do (occasionally) steaming baths.
  • when washing, use special shampoos for sphinxes.

Important! The ears of the pet are cleaned about once a week with cotton buds for infants. The procedure is carried out carefully, without going deep inside. If you have a cold (without other symptoms), rinse your nose with a weak solution of furatsilina.

The Canadian sphinx does not have eyelashes, and the cornea is protected from specks and dust by jelly-like secretions (jellies), which periodically accumulate in the corners of the eyes. Jellies are removed (from the outer corner of the eye to the inside) with a cotton pad soaked in boiled water.

Diet, diet

The better the industrial feed, the less health risks, therefore it is better to buy products marked "holistic", where there is a lot of meat and valuable components.

Many sphinxes enthusiastically eat natural food, where the main ingredients will be:

  • low-fat beef (raw);
  • boiled (slightly) chicken;
  • chicken neck / liver;
  • raw fish;
  • chicken / quail boiled egg (once a week);
  • dairy products (cottage cheese and sour cream).

Important! A tenth of the diet is vegetables and greens. Vegetables are pre-stewed or finely chopped: chopped carrots / cabbage are mixed with sour cream or meat. Paste is prepared from vegetables, fish or meat.

Anyone who intends to feed the cat straight, but does not want to turn into a cook, can turn to specialized companies that produce natural frozen food. Prepackaged food is stored in the freezer, and then heated in a microwave oven.

An indicator of a well-chosen diet will be your pet's appetite, stool and mood. Yes, by the way, the Canadian sphinxes are brutally voracious and always hungry, due to high metabolism. They are fed twice a day, but the portions (compared to other cats) are increased.

Diseases and birth defects

Sphinxes rarely get sick, and after suffering an infection, they maintain immunity until the end of life. Infections, especially respiratory infections, are more prone to kittens and young animals, which is why they are shown vaccination. Live vaccine often causes complications, so it is better to choose inactivated.

The weak point of the Canadian sphinx is the eyes. Alarming symptoms in which you should consult a doctor:

  • redness of the mucous membranes of the eyelids;
  • lacrimation
  • purulent discharge;
  • swollen third eyelid;
  • inability to open eyes.

Important! Contrary to popular belief, diarrhea is not a feature of the breed. With the liquid stool of the sphinx, it is necessary to review its diet, pay a visit to the doctor and take tests.

Periodic fouling of the sphinxes is associated with hormonal changes (estrus, pregnancy or lactation), the choice of food (stimulating the growth of hair) or the fact that the cat is cold freezing.

A runny nose often accompanies such ailments as:

  • mechanical rhinitis (foreign body);
  • neoplasms in the nasal cavity;
  • infectious diseases, including calicivirosis, pneumonia, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia, mycoplasmosis and infectious peritonitis;
  • allergy.

But the sphinxes practically do not get cancer and do not suffer from the scourge of other cats, urolithiasis, which is explained by the rapid metabolism.

Buy canadian sphinx

The breed is recognized everywhere: in all corners of the globe (and Russia is no exception), nurseries have been created aimed at breeding Canadian Sphynxes.

What to look for

Buy a kitten in licensed nurseries with a good reputation. Take it from a private person, look at cat's ears (the edge of the ear is located at eye level) and at the skin where light spraying is possible (like a peach or velvet fabric), but not hair.

Important! No serious nursery will sell a sphinx younger than 3 months old. A kitten who has been weaned from this mother until this age has difficulty accustoming to the tray and sometimes has health problems, both mental and physical.

It is the cat that introduces the kitten to the tray, scratching post and teaches you how to eat. By about 2.5 months, the kitten is aware of the limits of what is permissible in the game - the strength of its claws and teeth. The aggressiveness of the adult sphinx is due to the lack of socialization for which the mother is responsible. A kitten, early torn from its mother, is often shy, timid, not sociable, overly attached to the owner and completely dependent on him.

The second reason that explains the acquisition of a 3-month-old kitten is immunization. At 3 months, the sphinx received all the necessary vaccinations that protect it from various viruses and infections.

The price of a thoroughbred kitten

The range of prices for kittens of the Canadian sphinx is quite wide. The smallest that a buyer can count on is 10 thousand rubles (and far from always this amount includes the provision of documents). You will have to pay extra for the pedigree. The cost of the animal consists of the location and prestige of the nursery, the titularity of the producers and the qualities of the kitten itself (clean lines and exterior). Thoroughbred Canadian sphinxes can cost 30, 50 and even 100 thousand rubles.

Owner reviews

# review 1

Sociable and very affectionate cat, but with a huge minus - everywhere leaves dirty spots. The breeders are often silent about this, and I have to constantly wipe the floors and drive him away from clothes, so as not to rub. The places where our cat constantly lies, including carpets and rugs, are also dirty. This must be known to those who are about to start the Canadian Sphinx.

The cat is extremely smart - in our apartment I immediately found a tray and used it for its intended purpose. The myths that the sphinxes need special conditions have been completely dispelled. There are no problems with food at all, as the sphinxes are always hungry and burst everything that is not pinned. Our especially loves chicken, eggs and cottage cheese. An unpleasant feature - the sphinxes are sweating (with a brown coating), dirty furniture and things. You will find traces on the floor and on the bedding, but these spots are easily washed and washed. If you are not ready to put up with such physiological oddities, do not buy sphinxes. A feature of our cat is an increased love of water. She happily bathes, drinks from the faucet, watches the water trickles and loves to swim in the bathroom.
